When an engineer specifies a valve, they focus on type, size, material, and pressure rating. End connection — wafer, lug, or flanged — often gets decided last. That is a mistake.

The wrong end connection choice creates real problems: a wafer valve installed where a lug is needed means the line cannot be isolated for maintenance without shutting down the entire system. A flanged valve where space is tight means the valve simply will not fit.

The Three End Connection Types — What They Actually Mean

 

Wafer Type

A wafer valve sits between two pipe flanges and is clamped in place by the flange bolts passing around the outside of the valve body. The valve itself has no bolt holes — it depends entirely on the flanges on both sides to hold it in position.

Key characteristics:

  • Lightest and most compact of the three types
  • Lowest cost — least material, simplest casting
  • Cannot be used at the end of a pipeline or in dead-end service
  • Removing the valve requires unbolting both flanges on either side — the line on both sides must be isolated
  • Ideal for continuous, permanent pipeline installations where isolation of individual valves is not a regular requirement

Lug Type

A lug valve has threaded inserts (lugs) cast or machined around the body — one set per flange face. Bolts from each flange screw directly into these lugs, so each flange is independently bolted to the valve.

Key characteristics:

  • Each flange can be unbolted independently — the valve stays in place even when one side of the line is open
  • Suitable for dead-end service — one side of the pipeline can be removed with the valve holding pressure on the other side
  • Slightly heavier and more expensive than wafer type
  • Preferred wherever individual valve removal or line-end isolation is needed without a full system shutdown
  • Common in chemical plants, process industries, and anywhere maintenance access is a recurring requirement

Flanged Type

A flanged valve has integral flanges machined as part of the valve body. It bolts directly to the matching flanges on the pipeline using standard flange bolts and gaskets.

  • High pressure and temperature rating
  • Heaviest and most expensive — largest amount of material in the body
  • Most secure connection for high-vibration and high-pressure service
  • Can be removed independently without disturbing adjacent pipeline components
  • Standard for large-diameter valves, high-pressure systems, and critical process lines
  • Ball valves in flanged configuration are common in oil and gas, steam, and power plant service

How to Decide: 4 Questions to Ask Before Specifying

 

  1. Will you ever need to remove this valve while one side of the line is pressurised?

If yes — specify lug type minimum. A wafer valve cannot hold pressure when one flange is removed.

 

  1. Is this a dead-end or end-of-line installation?

Dead-end service requires lug or flanged type. Wafer valves have no independent connection to the pipeline and will fall out of position when the downstream flange is removed.

 

  1. What is the operating pressure?

For systems up to PN16, wafer or lug type or Flange End is typically sufficient. However for PN25 and above, specify flanged type to ensure adequate structural strength at the joint.

 

  1. What is the valve size?

For large diameter valves (DN300 and above), flanged type provides more secure installation and better load distribution. For smaller sizes in non-critical service, wafer or lug is the economical choice.
