Which Is Right for Your Plant?
The valve is rarely the hard part. The actuator decision is.
Once a plant engineer or instrumentation team decides to automate a valve — shift it from manual to remote or automatic operation — the next question is always: pneumatic or electric? Both work. Both are used in Indian industrial plants every day. But they are not interchangeable, and choosing the wrong one creates maintenance problems, control problems, or safety problems down the line.
OSKO Valves has been manufacturing and supplying actuated butterfly valves and ball valves from its plant at Khirasara GIDC, Rajkot since 1990. This guide is drawn from over 32 years of configuring actuated valve assemblies for water treatment, chemical, HVAC, and process industry projects across India and internationally.
An actuated valve is a standard valve body — butterfly, ball, or check — fitted with a motorised or air-powered actuator that opens and closes the valve without manual operation. The actuator receives a control signal and converts it into mechanical torque to rotate the valve disc or ball.
The combination of valve + actuator + control signal is what makes a pipeline remotely operable, automatically controlled, or capable of emergency shutdown. OSKO supplies actuated assemblies in three configurations:
This blog focuses on the most common decision: pneumatic versus electric.
A pneumatic actuator uses compressed air — typically at 4–7 bar supply pressure — to move a piston or rack-and-pinion mechanism that rotates the valve stem. Most pneumatic actuators are quarter-turn, making them well-suited to butterfly valves and ball valves.
A solenoid valve controls the air supply to the actuator, and the solenoid itself receives the control signal (typically 24V DC or 110/230V AC). The actuator moves the valve to open or closed position in response.
Spring-return pneumatic actuators (single-acting) use a spring to return the valve to a preset failsafe position if air supply or control signal is lost — a critical safety feature.
An electric actuator uses an electric motor driving through a gearbox to produce rotational torque on the valve stem. The motor receives a control signal — on/off (digital), 4-20 mA (modulating), or HART — and positions the valve accordingly.
Electric actuators include integrated limit switches, torque protection, and position feedback as standard. Modulating electric actuators can position the valve at any point between fully open and fully closed, enabling precise flow control rather than simple on/off operation.
| Parameter | Pneumatic Actuator | Electric Actuator |
| Power Source | Compressed air (4–7 bar) | Electricity (24V DC / 110V / 230V AC) |
| Response Speed | Very fast — under 2 seconds typical | Slower — 15–60 seconds depending on size |
| Control Type | On/Off (standard) or modulating with positioner | On/Off or modulating (built-in) |
| Failsafe | Stay put or Spring-return — reliable & simple | Stay put orBattery backup or spring failsafe (added cost) |
| Installation Cost | Lower valve cost; compressed air line required | Higher upfront; no air line needed |
| Operating Cost | Air supply has ongoing energy cost | Very low — only draws power during movement |
| Hazardous Area (ATEX) | Preferred — no electrical ignition risk | Requires ATEX-rated motor (higher cost) |
| Modulating Control | Requires positioner (add-on) | Preferred for flow control loops (add-on) |
| Maintenance | Seals wear with cycles; air drier needed | Minimal; gearbox lubrication periodic |
| Best Valve Size | DN50 to DN600 (standard torque range) | DN50 to DN400 (standard; larger on request) |
| Position Feedback | Limit switches (add-on) | Integrated position transmitter standard |
Pneumatic actuation is the right choice in these situations:

Solenoid valve, limit switches, and air filter-regulator units can be included in the supply. Specify: supply pressure available, control signal voltage, failsafe position (fail-open / fail-closed). |
Electric actuation is the right choice in these situations:
| OSKO Electric Actuated Valves:
Available on butterfly valve and ball valve configurations. Torque range: specified to match valve size and operating pressure at order stage. Available with 4-20 mA input, position feedback (4-20 mA output), OPEN-CLOSE-STOP control. Specify: control signal type, supply voltage, torque requirement, and failsafe option at inquiry. |
OSKO supplies actuated valve assemblies as complete, tested units — valve body, actuator, mounting bracket, and coupling. Every assembly is tested at our Rajkot manufacturing facility using our in-house pressure testing rigs before dispatch.
| Valve Type | Actuator Options | Typical Applications |
| Aluminium Butterfly Valve | Pneumatic / Electric | HVAC, water treatment, light process |
| CI/DI Wafer Butterfly Valve | Pneumatic / Electric | Municipal water, irrigation, utilities |
| Double Offset Butterfly Valve | Pneumatic / Electric / Hydraulic | High-cycle process, chemical, power plant |
| Wafer Type Ball Valve | Pneumatic / Electric | Chemical dosing, gas lines, small bore service |
| Flanged Ball Valve | Pneumatic / Electric | High-pressure on/off, steam-adjacent service |
| ISO 5211 Mounting Pad — standard on all OSKO actuator-ready valves.
This is the international standard interface between valve and actuator. It means any ISO 5211-compliant actuator from any manufacturer can be fitted without a custom adapter. Always confirm this when sourcing actuated valves — without it, you pay for custom adapters and lose the ability to swap actuators in future. |
What does the valve do if power fails, air supply fails, or the control signal is lost? This is the failsafe position, and it must be specified before the actuator is ordered — not after.
| Failsafe Position | When to Specify It | Actuator Required |
| Fail-Closed | Safety-critical isolation valves; toxic or flammable media | Spring-return pneumatic (standard) or electric with spring |
| Fail-Open | Cooling water lines where closing on failure causes overheating | Spring-return pneumatic (reverse spring) or electric with spring |
| Fail-In-Place or Stay Put | Modulating control loops where last position is acceptable | Double-acting pneumatic with lock or electric with brake |
Pneumatic spring-return actuators deliver failsafe position within 1-2 seconds of air or signal loss — no battery, no UPS required. This is why ESD valves in refineries, chemical plants, and gas handling installations almost always use pneumatic actuation.
Electric failsafe systems require either a battery-backed motor or a mechanical spring addition to the actuator. These work reliably but add cost and a battery maintenance requirement.
Q: Can OSKO supply the actuated valve as a complete tested assembly — valve, actuator, solenoid, and limit switches together?
Yes. OSKO supplies complete actuated assemblies — valve body, actuator, mounting bracket, coupling, solenoid valve (for pneumatic), and limit switches — as a single tested unit. This eliminates on-site assembly errors and ensures the assembly is leak-tested and cycle-tested before dispatch.
Q: What control signal does OSKO’s electric actuated valve accept?
Standard electric actuated valves accept OPEN-CLOSE-STOP three-wire digital control. Modulating versions accept 4-20 mA input and provide 4-20 mA position feedback output. HART protocol is available on selected actuators. Specify your control system requirement at the time of inquiry.
Q: What compressed air pressure is required for OSKO pneumatic actuators?
Standard pneumatic actuators operate on 4–7 bar supply pressure. Confirm your plant’s available instrument air pressure at the time of inquiry. We will size the actuator and solenoid valve to your supply pressure and the required valve torque.
Q: Can an electric actuator be added to an existing OSKO manual valve?
Yes — if the valve was supplied with an ISO 5211 mounting pad, an electric actuator can be fitted with a standard mounting bracket and coupling without modifying the valve body. All OSKO actuator-ready butterfly and ball valves include the ISO 5211 pad as standard. Contact us with the valve model, size, and torque requirement.
Q: What is the lead time for an actuated valve assembly from OSKO?
Standard pneumatic actuated assemblies are dispatched within 10-15 working days. Electric actuated assemblies typically require 12–25 working days, depending on actuator availability and configuration. Large quantity orders or special configurations — ATEX-rated, hydraulic, high-cycle spec — require 25–35 working days. Confirm at order stage.
Pneumatic and electric actuators are both reliable technologies. The decision comes down to your plant’s infrastructure, safety requirements, control system, and cycle frequency — not to price or preference.
If you have compressed air and need fast failsafe: pneumatic. If you need modulating control, SCADA integration, or have no air supply: electric. If you have a large bore valve in a critical ESD service: pneumatic spring-return, always.
