Which End Connection Does Your Plant Actually Need?
When an engineer specifies a valve, they focus on type, size, material, and pressure rating. End connection — wafer, lug, or flanged — often gets decided last. That is a mistake.
The wrong end connection choice creates real problems: a wafer valve installed where a lug is needed means the line cannot be isolated for maintenance without shutting down the entire system. A flanged valve where space is tight means the valve simply will not fit.
This guide explains exactly what separates wafer, lug, and flanged end connections, and which one belongs in your pipeline.
A wafer valve sits between two pipe flanges and is clamped in place by the flange bolts passing around the outside of the valve body. The valve itself has no bolt holes — it depends entirely on the flanges on both sides to hold it in position.

A lug valve has threaded inserts (lugs) cast or machined around the body — one set per flange face. Bolts from each flange screw directly into these lugs, so each flange is independently bolted to the valve.

A flanged valve has integral flanges machined as part of the valve body. It bolts directly to the matching flanges on the pipeline using standard flange bolts and gaskets.

If yes — specify lug type minimum. A wafer valve cannot hold pressure when one flange is removed.
Dead-end service requires lug or flanged type. Wafer valves have no independent connection to the pipeline and will fall out of position when the downstream flange is removed.
For systems up to PN16, wafer or lug type or Flange End is typically sufficient. However for PN25 and above, specify flanged type to ensure adequate structural strength at the joint.
For large diameter valves (DN300 and above), flanged type provides more secure installation and better load distribution. For smaller sizes in non-critical service, wafer or lug is the economical choice.

Q: Can a wafer valve be used in outdoor or buried pipeline service?
Not recommended for buried service. Wafer valves depend on both flanges remaining properly aligned — ground movement, soil pressure, or settlement can cause misalignment. For buried service, specify flanged type with proper flange protection.
Q: What is the difference between a wafer check valve and a lug check valve?
A wafer check valve (non-return valve) sits between flanges with no independent bolting. A lug check valve has threaded inserts so it can be installed at end-of-line or where one side must be removed independently. Q: Can OSKO supply both wafer and lug versions of the same valve in one order?
Yes. Projects with mixed requirements — wafer for continuous lines, lug for isolation points — can be supplied in a single order with common documentation. This is a common requirement in water treatment and chemical plant projects.
End connection is specified once and lives with the pipeline for decades. Getting it wrong means either a valve that cannot be maintained safely, or a costly modification at the time of the next shutdown.
The decision is straightforward when you know the four questions: dead-end service, maintenance frequency, operating pressure, and line size. If any of these are unclear at the time of specification, that is the right time to consult a valve manufacturer — not after the order is placed.
